Dyscalculia and Dyslexia, it is in the genes

Dyscalculia: News from the web:

Apparently the ability to read and write and do math has a considerable overlap at the genes level. We link to a study about it, here a quote:

Understanding the etiology (causes or origins) of complex cognitive characteristics like numeracy and literacy ability is key to assisting children with achieving their potential and gaining knowledge of population variation in cognitive abilities and the substantial genetic components shared with learning difficulties such as dyslexia and dyscalculia.

So Dyscalculia really has little or nothing to do with IQ

Dyscalculia: News from the web:

One of the ways people would go about finding out if a child has dyscalculia, is by looking at the IQ and then confirming that math skills are much lower as would be predicted by the general IQ. This discrepancy would indicate the presence of dyscalculia. Now however a study done earlier this year, also looked at children with lower or average IQ and found that number sense can be equally affected, independent from the IQ.

Dyscalculia is not an excuse

Dyscalculia: News from the web:

We heard a parent resisting labeling their child being evaluated and detected as having Dyscalculia. The comment was something like “That will just give them an excuse not to even try anymore”.

This view is apparently shared by lots of parents and I can understand where they are coming from. But see it like this. If someone has lost part of a leg, it won’t stop them from exercising, they just need expert help to find out how they can continue their sport. If they do not get help, they won’t be able to accomplish much and will get frustrated and give up. However with the right help and encouragement they are still capable of great things.

Likewise with children with a learning disability. If you don’t provide them with the expert help they need to succeed they will give up, avoid the subject and at worst develop low self esteem. If children with a learning disability are provided with the right support they can and will thrive. As soon as they see any progress they will be proud and want to do more so they can shine again.

Withholding the right support to children with Dyscalculia can have a major impact on their childhood happiness, their success in school and subsequent education opportunities, their careers and their life.

Please if you think dyscalculia or another learning disability label is an excuse not to try, talk to the experts, we are available to help and explain.
