Should people be held back because they have dyscalculia?

Dyscalculia: News from the web:

It is an interesting question, brought up by a petition that is doing the rounds in the UK. Someone wants to move forward in her career but needs a level of math that she won’t probably ever attain with her dyscalculia. Her mother calls it discrimination but how about if you really need a certain command of math for that particular career?

The importance of math in medicine and your health

Dyscalculia: News from the web:

Breast Cancer Patients Need to Know the Numbers for Treatment Decisions Risk calculations, treatment evaluations, and assessing the odds of a medication’s side effects are all part of the process of deciding which treatment is best for breast and other cancers.

But not everyone is good at math, and sometimes this process can be intimidating. For these patients, decision science research can offer well-founded advice on how to evaluate the information and make knowledgeable decisions.

A joke and some advice

Dyscalculia: News from the web:

Our son studies computer science, so here is the joke: Four engineers drive a car that suddenly stops. The E&I engineer says “let me check the cabling the wires probably got crossed”, the rotating engineer says ” let me check the bearings on the wheels the probably don’t function anymore”, the chemical engineer says ” let me test the gas, it probably has the wrong formula” , the computer engineer says “maybe if we all get out of the car and get back in and start it again it will work”.

Funny but it relates to the little article in our link for today where the UK Psych net correctly identifies the issues surrounding dyscalculia and then advises as solution counseling and psychotherapy.

What teachers know about dyscalculia

Dyscalculia: News from the web:

A study about this has now been done:

Although much research on teachers’ knowledge and attitudes
towards their students with dyslexia has been accumulated, students
with dyscalculia have not gained the same attention. Teachers’
knowledge about the nature and characteristics of students with
dyscalculia seems to be limited and this has a strong impact on their
instructional decisions. In secondary education, where teachers’ pre
service educational programs are more focused on the scientific subject
instead of appropriate instructional methods, teachers’ knowledge about
dyscalculia has not yet been taken into account.
