Martin Saunders writes a good story about the role of language in children’s learning of Mathematics. His conclusion (but you really need to read the whole piece in our link for today):

In summary, it is clear that language is a requirement for mathematical cognition, if not higher cognition in general. Where language is a component of understanding it must also be a requirement for the learning process. A symbiotic relationship exists where dialogue, and in particular creating explanations, aids to build understanding but also to apply this understanding in ever more complex ways. As the ability to consider multiple conceptual areas collectively grows and with number facts readily available a proficient mathematician develops who is able to reason and problem solve with fluency.

Primary and Secondary Developmental Dyscalculia

Mathematical performance deficits, Developmental Dyscalculia, may arise because of a wide range of factors, from poor teaching, to low socio-economic status, to behavioral attention problems. However, a subset of children with math difficulties, possibly with the most-severe impairments, appears to suffer from a developmental learning disorder that undermines the ability to process basic numerical magnitude information, and that impairment in turn undermines the acquisition of school-level arithmetic skills. This disorder, “primary developmental dyscalculia,” should not be confused with “secondary developmental dyscalculia,” which refers to mathematical deficits stemming from external factors such as those described above. Instead, primary DD is associated with impaired development of brain mechanisms for processing numerical magnitude information and is thus driven by endogenous neurodevelopmental factors.

False diagnoses of Dyscalculia

Some parents are concerned about their children getting good grades and are envious of the children with learning disabilities who qualify for additional time on tests. They even, as you can read in the link for today, resort to getting bogus diagnoses from shady bureaus just to fool the schools into given accommodations where none are necessary.

The damage is obvious;

it shows that these parents do not care about the children who really need the accommodations
it undermines the authority of respectable bureaus
they hurt the children with a real learning disability by confusing the schools and testing organizations.

When you suspect something like this is going on, let us know, we will highlight it and expose it.

Meanwhile only work with bureaus that have proven their honest passion to help children with Dyscalculia.

The Child Find Mandate

It is still early in the year and by now you may have found out that your child is struggling at school with, for example, math. Your child may have a learning disability that needs to get diagnosed. Well the school districts have a “Child Find” mandate that requires them to Identify Students with Special Needs. If they are not making enough progress you do not have to wait for them to take the first step but you can actually approach them and request evaluation.

Neurodiversity. It’s not a term that rolls off the tongue easily but it’s a concept where neurological differences are to be recognized and respected as any other human variation.
