Dyscalculia is not an excuse

Dyscalculia: News from the web:

We heard a parent resisting labeling their child being evaluated and detected as having Dyscalculia. The comment was something like “That will just give them an excuse not to even try anymore”.

This view is apparently shared by lots of parents and I can understand where they are coming from. But see it like this. If someone has lost part of a leg, it won’t stop them from exercising, they just need expert help to find out how they can continue their sport. If they do not get help, they won’t be able to accomplish much and will get frustrated and give up. However with the right help and encouragement they are still capable of great things.

Likewise with children with a learning disability. If you don’t provide them with the expert help they need to succeed they will give up, avoid the subject and at worst develop low self esteem. If children with a learning disability are provided with the right support they can and will thrive. As soon as they see any progress they will be proud and want to do more so they can shine again.

Withholding the right support to children with Dyscalculia can have a major impact on their childhood happiness, their success in school and subsequent education opportunities, their careers and their life.

Please if you think dyscalculia or another learning disability label is an excuse not to try, talk to the experts, we are available to help and explain.

Dyscalculia awareness

Dyscalculia: News from the web:

We are kind of passionate about awareness for dyscalculia. Dyslexia starts to ring a bell in schools but dyscalculia is too often just shrugged away with “oh they are just bad at math”. In the link today a nice post from someone who wants to list every one who should have known about her dyscalculia in the years in school. Good read, spread the word!

Don’t do this to a child with dyscalculia

Dyscalculia: News from the web:

Check out the, no doubt meant as funny, correction someone played on a sixth grade kid. Not funny when you have dyscalculia. Life is difficult enough and besides that, the children with dyscalculia should be allowed the use of this device. Check the link to figure out what I’m talking about.
