if we are serious about supporting all students, not just fortunate ones, we have to teach behaviour, not just tell it or only react to it. And provide safe environments where everyone is protected from abuse or harassment by loving boundaries, patrolled by humane and robust consequences. Not “zero tolerance”, which is a misunderstanding of how high standards work. All rules have exceptions, otherwise they’re cruel. What we need is very, very low tolerance of misbehaviour, and only make allowances when circumstances demand them. Sanctions are one, important part of this process, but so are many other things. You don’t stop speeding by relying on speed cameras alone – you teach people how to drive too. It’s a magazine of approaches.
