Dyscalculia research at Oxford

Dyscalculia: News from the web:

The Department of Experimental Psychology at Oxford is leading the EU-funded Learning & Achievement project, a long-term study which is first looking at healthy subjects and using MRI scans as part of its efforts to find out how our brains process numbers and how that mathematical ability fits in with other cognitive abilities.

In parallel with that research project, whose results will not be clear for some time, the Cohen Kadosh lab is taking a more practical, short-term approach, working with schools and parents to carry out cognitive training with children who have dyscalculia – helping them find ways to work around their condition.

The researchers are recruiting for their study – for details go to: http://sites.google.com/site/brain4maths/welcome

Do not overdo the technology at schools

Dyscalculia: News from the web:

Some schools fall in love with the wealth of information the new connected society offers us. There are limits though. School Boards would do good to read the research done by Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Their research shows that children who use a moderate amount of technology in the classroom do better than the ones who do not have technology at all at their disposal but children with a classroom with an abundance of technology do way worse than their counterparts with less or no technology.

Dyscalculia explained

Dyscalculia: News from the web:

The website Teachers pay teachers offers a free short description of what dyscalculia is. They have taken some symptoms of other sites and the information does not go very deep but it is a good start, see it HERE (registration required)

Another site offering general information about Dyscalculia, and they base their knowledge on Brian Butterworth’s work, is assitivemart.com. This piece is interesting for their comment under the section “Why is solving Dyscalculia so important” you’ll be shocked to read the answer:

“A study has shown that low numeracy was more of a handicap for an individual’s life chances than low literacy. They earn less, spend less, are more likely to be sick, are more likely to be in trouble with the law, and need more help in school.”
